Whilst James and I were visiting family in Plymouth, my grandma booked us into the Barbican Kitchen for a meal. We had never heard of it before however upon looking at reviews it seemed to be really nice so we were excited to give it a go. It is located at the Barbican and is attached to the Plymouth Gin Distillery – so you know you’ll at least get a fabulous g&t!
The restaurant is quite hidden and I don’t think we would have spotted it if we hadn’t been in the area specifically for it. The decor was lovely and with a definite nautical theme which is very fitting for the area. We went on a Thursday so it was pretty quiet however I do think it would be busy over a weekend so definitely a place to book.
While we were deciding what to eat we opted to have some Garlic Ciabatta topped with mozzarella and thyme. You really cannot go wrong with garlic bread but this truly was yummy especially with a cheeky glass of Malbec.
For starters I decided to go for the Crispy Prawn Taco which came with a tortilla, lettuce, avocado, sour cream and a mountain of crispy coated prawns. I believe they change the type of seafood that goes in the tortilla from time to time but if they have the prawns on the menu I would highly recommend them! The prawns were cooked perfectly and I loved the light crunch that came with the coating. There was zero chance of me eating this like an actual taco though – it was a definite fork and knife job.
Considering we went to a fish based restaurant, James doesn’t actually like fish! He opted for the Chicken and Ham Hock Terrine which came with a little side of coleslaw, salad and a slice of ciabatta too. He thoroughly enjoyed this and said it was surprisingly filling too.
For mains I decided to stick to the fish theme and went for the Lemon Sole, this came with a side of chips and a lovely beetroot salad. Once I got over the bone removal process I decided to mix the fish in with the salad, mainly to make it a bit easier to eat everything. I truly could not fault the dish one bit. The fish fell away from the bone very easily and tasted beautiful which I definitely expected for the hefty £21 price tag!
Like I said, James is not a fan of fish so for mains he went for the West Country Steak Burger. The burger had the regular cheese, bacon, lettuce and tomato filling but it’s the burger itself that really stood out. It was hot and juicy without feeling greasy like some burgers can be. It of course, came with a side of chips which we both agreed are some of the best chips we have had in a long time!
Before we went to the restaurant we had a quick peek at the puddings and were both very keen to save room for one however we enjoyed our starters and mains so much that we truly could not bring ourselves to even share a pudding! Big portions is never something I will complain about though!
If you live in Plymouth or are ever visiting, I would 100% recommend popping by the Barbican Kitchen. I can assure you that you will not be disappointed by the food, service or even the general atmosphere of the restaurant.
Have a good weekend!

That chicken and ham hock terrine is definitely one of the most interesting dishes I’ve ever seen! 😳
