5 THINGS THAT I HAVE LEARNED FROM BLOGGING

April 25, 2019

Recently my little blog turned 3 years old! I have had many ups and downs with my blog and lets be honest I’ve given up on it a few times too. Sometimes life gets in the way and learning that that is okay can be a real struggle. A struggle that I know I am not the only one who has or is dealing with. With that in mind I thought I’d put together a little list of things I have learnt over my wee blogging career.

BEING DISCIPLINED IS IMPORTANT

Over the years I’ve been very irregular with my writing. Some weeks I’d post 3 times and then I wouldn’t post again for another 3 months!! Yet I wondered why I wasn’t growing – I was an unreliable blogger. This year I have been posting twice a week, Monday and Thursday – minus the odd Tuesday upload and from this my growth has been amazing! In just 4 months I have gained 100 followers on my blog and I have already hit over 75% of the views I got last year.

IT IS FREAKING TIME CONSUMING

I cannot tell you the amount of times someone has said “I should start a blog, it looks so easy”. Please never start a blog on this premise! It takes time to not only write the blog posts but also take photos, as well as finding your niche. Heck just thinking about things to write about takes time!! For me it can take anywhere from 30 minutes to 3 hours to write a post depending on how inspired I am feeling that day or what I’m writing about. I try to spend one day a week getting photos for my posts for the following week and you also have to factor in editing time too.

YOU CAN’T PLEASE EVERYONE

Not everyone likes the same things as you – and that is absolutely fine! Some people have an interest in beauty and others are interested in food – at the end of the day you have to write for yourself. I started my blog purely because I enjoyed writing and also trying out new make up, which at the beginning was literally all I wrote about. Since then I have ventured into writing about food and exploring fashion too. In the future I am hoping to do more house related content like interior design or space saving tips and tricks.

NEVER COMPARE YOURSELF TO SOMEONE ELSE

You are you. You will never get the same results as someone else or have the same photos as someone else and that isn’t a bad thing! Sometimes it can look like someone has become an internet sensation in under 6 months when really they may be on their 3rd or 4th blog over many years. I also used to think that if you were pretty, skinny or spent hundreds on clothing, it would get you ahead and it really demotivated me because I never felt like I fit in but I’m starting to see how absolutely ridiculous that is!  At a size 14, I am not skinny however that hasn’t stopped fashion brands reaching out to me. Being yourself is 100% the best thing for you and your blog!

BE PATIENT

This one kind of ties into the last point. Success will not happen overnight, or maybe not even in your first year. There are of course some people who manage to hit all the right spots and do show incredible results very quickly but if you aren’t one of those people that is perfectly fine too. As I mentioned at the beginning of this post it hasn’t really been until 2019 that I’ve felt like my blog has succeeded and I’m seeing growth and I’m working with brands and I’m blimmin’ proud of it!

There is many things that I have learnt from blogging and these are just a few! Maybe near the end of the year I’ll do a giant post including everything I’ve learnt but I think it will be a long read!

To all my blogger readers – let me know in the comments one thing that you have learnt from blogging and to all my non blogger readers – let me know in the comments if any of these surprised you because I’d be really interested to know!

I totally agree that it’s time consuming! If I could just write and not have to worry about all the social media stuff. 😀

Blogging takes up a lot of time! And I think it can be really hard sometimes not comparing yourself to other blogs. Really enjoyed reading about the things you learned!
