SIMPLE THINGS YOU CAN DO TO HELP THE ENVIRONMENT

May 13, 2019

In 2019 there has been a huge emphasis on saving the planet – more so than past years. I always took the stance of ‘I am one person, there’s nothing I can do that will make a difference’ and I’m sure that there is so many other people that feel this way too which is why there is such little change! I also struggled with simply knowing where to start so I’ve put together a short list of super easy ways to start helping the environment.

REUSABLE BAGS

Buy a canvas bag or two and keep them on you at all times. Canvas bags are so useful for many different things. You can use them for bringing your lunch to work, buying groceries or just any other shopping that you may do! You can buy these for as little as £1 or you can even make your own! Kat Stoddart from Life_withKat has a highlight called ‘ECO’ where she posts about her eco-friendly journey and also shows you how to make your own produce bags!

REUSABLE CUPS

Having a reusable cup is key whether it is for hot or cold drinks. I own many water bottles and travel mugs and yet there is still times where I forget them – I’m human after all! On days where I forget my cup I do try to not buy a take out coffee but if I do I make sure I recycle all the packaging that comes with it. You don’t have to spend a fortune on these – Primark sell some really cheap ones.

TURN OFF YOUR LIGHTS

Have a think about this – do you turn off the light when you leave the room? no? By not turning off lights you are wasting incredible amounts of energy and it just isn’t necessary! Simply turning off lights in a room that you aren’t using can have a massive positive effect on our planet.

HAVE A MEAT FREE DAY

I’m not vegan, nor am I vegetarian however I try to dedicate at least one day to being completely meat free – quite often I end up having 2 or 3 days purely on accident. There is so many meat free options that are incredibly tasty.

METAL STRAWS

Metal straws have become somewhat of a fashion trend so this is definitely an easy one to jump on board with. I purchased a set of 8 straws on Amazon for around £7 and they came with straw cleaners and a little bag to keep them in too – fantastic! These are particularly great when going out for food or a night out – just remember not to leave it!

SUSTAINABLE FASHION

This is a new one to me. I truly wasn’t aware of how much waste there is when producing clothing and it did shock me. I used to buy clothing left, right and center without ever thinking of the consequences to the environment (or my bank balance). I am now trying to create a wardrobe that is inter-changeable with each other to create multiple looks rather than having a top that only goes with a certain pair on trousers. Charity shops or Depop are also great ways to find new items without the heavy price tag or damage to the environment.

By slowly introducing these ideas into your life you can help to improve the world we live in. In no way am I saying to be super extreme and give up all plastic and go vegan – unless that’s the route you wanna take – I’m just saying by adopting just one of these you can help the environment massively.

Do you have any other eco-friendly tips? Let me know in the comments!

Thanks for reading!

Thank you for this! Just few days ago I wrote about this but my post is yet to come. As I read your post, I was confused if I already released mine because it was similar and in parts almost identical 😀
I also emphasized the „I am only one, what change can I make“ but when you think about it – if all of us thinks that way, change can not be made (as you wrote). But you and me – 2 persons. Another reads your posts and it is encouraged – now 3 persons. That third persons tells another and now are more.
My comments are always long and I don’t want to sound like the bitter persons that are constantly nagging about their believes, but this subject is so important and more that a believe.
Have a nice start of the week and keep up the good work 🙂

Love this girl! I was always the same thinking I couldn’t do anything as just one person and not knowing where to start but the smallest changes really can make an impact! Thanks for sharing xx

Great post! We’re trying to have a meat-free week once a month, I thought I’d miss it but I really don’t!

That’s actually a really good way of doing it! I know what you mean, I always said to myself “I don’t think I could ever stop eating fish or chicken” but it doesn’t actually bother me as much as I thought it would. Veggie alternatives are often just as good! x

The guilt that Millennials feel for the state of environment is incredible at the moment and we can never have too many posts like this! These are all super important things, even if they seem feeble, because the more of us there are practicing these little things every day, the bigger the impact. Especially when it comes to fashion I hope more and more people will become aware of the issues the industry creates and also the solutions it provides.

Absolutely! I definitely want to do more research into the fashion industry and make a more detailed post about the waste new clothing generates. Obviously it is silly to think we will ever stop producing clothing but just reducing it would be a fantastic start x

You can get them almost anywhere now! You can also get silicone ones if you don’t like the feeling of the metal! x

You’re so right that it can feel that one person can’t make a difference! I think we do need systemic change at industrial and governmental levels too, but that doesn’t mean that the small things don’t matter. Cutting down on meat is such a good one to highlight too, and doesn’t mean that you’re going to miss out on flavour! One of my favourite swaps is halloumi burgers:

As you say, you can easily find yourself accidentally having eaten vegetarian because it just tastes so good!
