An evening of so-fish-ticated dining!
I had the most fin-tastic invite to the launch of Six By Nico in Aberdeen. I know, I know these puns are pretty carp…yeah, I’ll stop
As per the title, Six By Nico’s themed dinner was THE CHIPPER. The inspiration comes from Nico’s Scots-Italian family heritage in ode to a long line of chip shop owners and wow it was a knock out!
APERITIF & SNACKS

-Seaside Spritz; Lemon / Earl Grey / Prosecco / Samphire
-Sourdough Bread, Shellfish Butter
-Smoked Cod Croquettes
COURSE 1 – Chips & Cheese

-Parmesan Espuma / Curry Oil & Emulsion / Crisp Potato Terrine
COURSE 2 – Scampi

-Crispy Monkfish Cheek / Wild Garlic Emulsion / Gribiche / Peas / Beurre Blanc
-Wine; Muscadet Sevre et Main AOP, Chateau Thebaud, Loire, France. A beautiful crisp white wine with notes of red apple. This one was very sweet to compliment the meatiness of the fish.
COURSE 3 – Steak Pie

-24 Hour Beef Shin / Burnt Onion Ketchup / Mushroom Duxelle / ‘Meaty Salsa’
-Wine; Magnolia, Montepulciano d’Abruzzo DOC, Azienda Talamonti, Abruzzo, Italy. A dry red wine with berry after notes. The earthy tones married well with the heavy beef flavours.
COURSE 4 – Fish Supper

-Shetland Cod / Pickled Mussels / Confit Fennel / Samphire / Beer Emulsion Parmesan
-Wine; Chenin Blanc, William Robertson, Robertson, South Africa. This wine is from just above Cape Town which has very little rain which in turn creates smaller grapes. Flavour wise this makes it more of a dry, citrus like taste which pairs beautifully with the pickled mussels.
COURSE 5 – Smoked Sausage

-Trio of Pork / Apple / Black Pudding / Salt Baked Celeriac / Choucroute
-Wine; Pinotage Rose, Highveld, Western Cape, South African. Another South African wine but our first and only Rose of the evening, was quite a light and fruity Rose as they decided that a red wine would have been too heavy for the trio of pork.
COURSE 6 – Deep Fried Mars Bar

-Chocolate Pave / Irn Bru Sorbet / Chocolate Soil
-Wine; Grains de Plaisir, Cotes de Gascogne IGP, South West, France. Our final white of the night was again a dry wine with melon notes to balance out the heavily sweet dessert. Often I find that dessert wines are too sweet for me but this one was enjoyable.
The Chipper menu will be available from April 28th through to June 5th so plenty time to get yourself booked in! The Six Course Tasting Menu is £37 per person and an additional £30 per person to have the matching wines.
FINAL THOUGHTS ON SIX BY NICO
We had a truly lovely evening at Six by Nico, Aberdeen! Each dish was absolutely incredible. I think overall my favourite dish was the Steak Pie; it honestly melted in your mouth. The flavours they put together were phenomenal and each wine complimented the dishes so well. The waitress we had on the night was un-faultable. She was attentive and also very informative about each dish/wine.
One thing I would point out is that it is a long evening and can run quite late depending on the sitting you choose. We sat down at 8pm and had our pudding around 10pm. The general timeslot is 2 hours, so it is something to bare in mind if you don’t fancy eating until late.
A final massive thank you to the Six by Nico Aberdeen team for inviting me along and providing us with such a wonderful evening! I cannot wait to see the next tasting inspiration!
